The great thing about QNX CAR is that it pre-integrates a bunch of third party software to get you up and running quickly. The problem with QNX CAR is that it integrates a bunch of third party software and QNX cannot unify the license terms under which these third parties will engage with you. You need to be aware of this when you get past the point of prototyping because you will need to work directly with the companies whose software you want to use in order to sort out commercial terms.
As a participant in the QNX CAR program, we are lending you a reference board pre-loaded with QNX CAR software to evaluate, prototype and demonstrate systems based on QNX CAR. You also get access to the QNX CAR project on Foundry27. In the box you received you will find a letter that points out the terms of use in more detail. You should read it. You should have received a copy by email and there is a generic copy of it on the QNX CAR website as well.
The QNX CAR reference board and software are being made available to you under the terms of the QNX Developer License that you agreed to when you installed your QNX Momentics Tool Suite. There is no charge up to the point where you start working on a production-based program.
You can show your QNX CAR prototype to your customers but you cannot leave it in their hands. To leave a prototype behind you will have work out redistribution rights with all the software vendors who have technology that you have used in your prototype. There’s a good chance that someone in your company has already engaged with many of them, so hopefully this won’t be a big deal. Also, you must not attempt to reverse engineer any software provided in object or executable code form (it’s provided this way for a reason).
As part of the QNX CAR project, you will have access to QNX commercial products and you will also get access to a technology incubator where you will be able to get your hands on all sorts of experimental code. You are welcome to use the experimental code but you should keep in mind that it is experimental and may not be part of an established product plan or have finalized commercial license terms.
That’s about it. There’s a detailed QNX License Guide available that covers all the QNX commercial software if you need more information (information for experimental code will be posted on the Foundry 27 site for QNX CAR). Enjoy!
